How to keep your Metro Atlanta home comfortable this winter11/24/2015The dipping temperatures in Metro Atlanta aren’t going anywhere, and while it’s easy to dream about the warmer temperatures, it’s critical to remember that you can remain just as comfortable during winter. Of course, your furnace plays a big role in this, which is why it’s so important to schedule annual furnace service. We do have to bring up the fact that there aren’t many things that will provide as much to your comfort this year as a well-tuned furnace. That’s why furnace service should be done annually. After all, who wants to spend a frigid winter not knowing if their furnace is going to keep them warm the whole time? Already check off your annual furnace service? Here are a handful of other jobs you can do to help keep your home comfortable: Energy audit — many energy companies will provide an energy audit for your home so you can identify areas that need addressed. You may be surprised what areas are letting hot or cold air to escape. Weatherstripping — regardless of the door, doors permit the opportunity for a lot of cold air to get in to your home. However, when your door is shut, you may still have air making its way inside. Check to see if your weatherstripping is in-tact or if it’s worn, torn, or damaged in any other way that could be letting cold air inside. If you notice any issues, weatherstripping is easy to swap and could take care of the problem. Recessed lighting — one of the most common places for air leaks can be your recessed lighting. Depending on the light’s age, they may be letting all the hot air in your home escape through your ceiling. Fixing this is as basic as sealing it with caulk or aluminum tape. These three tips are just the beginning, but do recognize that there are other basic fixes you can complete once you’ve had annual furnace service completed. Many of them can be cost-effective and easy jobs to complete on the weekend.
