Is it Time for Furnace Service or Replacement?

January 05, 2016

When winter comes and we start receiving calls about furnaces that aren't creating heat, the majority of them can be linked back to a lack of regular furnace service and maintenance. If furnace concerns are not taken care of, your system could suddenly stop operating and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are a few warning signs you can watch for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system quits working.

Furnace Age

The normal life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's a good idea to start furnace shopping now. Selecting a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make on the fly. Give yourself plenty of time to research and weigh all of your options.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they age and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been properly maintained. Imagine the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that could be going towards purchasing a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last few years of a furnace's life are when your system encounters the most breakdowns. Begin adding up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the last two years - a new system may be more cost efficient.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any strange noises coming from your system? Furnaces start making strange noises around the end of their lifespan. If your furnace is turning on and off frequently or blowing cool air, it's time to look at getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home very well. Your home could start feeling stuffy and any family members with allergies may notice more symptoms. A few other signs are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.
